Recent work update: Senators on Capitol Hill and military healthcare portrait

This week I have updated my recent work gallery with several recent news assignment many of which took place on Capitol Hill. The Hill has been a busy place following the 2010 US midterm election where Republicans won enough seats to take control of the US House in the 112th Congress. Although the election directly effects the House, the Senate as been in the news too. This update includes several photos taken in the Senate while covering the extension of Bush-era tax breaks, 9/11 healthcare funding, a failed“Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy repeal and other legislation. Also included is a portrait to go with a story on TriCare and military healthcare spending.

Washington, DC is the place to be for protests, rallies and other political gatherings of all shapes and sizes. I have updated The Smialowski Image Archive with a special special gallery devoted to protests and rallies. I hope to show the great diversity not only of views reflect at these gatherings but also the variety in makeup, size, intensity and actions which these groups reflect.

My recent work update includes work from a variety of recent assignments. I was assigned to photograph the Washington Monument for a story about Washington, DC building height. Also included in this update is an image taken while shooting stock photos at Costco and a photo from a “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell protest in front of the White House. Also, I photographed a Medal of Honor ceremony for Salvatore Giunta who is the first recipient of the medal since the Viet Nam war.

Today I have updated my recent work to include some seasonal news and election coverage. I was assigned to cover the 35th annual Marine Corps Marathon while paying special attention to increased security due to a recent series of shooting targeting US Marine and military facilities including the Pentagon. I spent a lot of time covering the 2010 midterm elections including spending election day and night with Delaware’s US Senate candidates. Prior to covering the elections I was at the White House where trick or treaters visited the Executive Mansion for Halloween.

While being based in Washington, DC I routinely work at the White House, Capitol Hill, the Pentagon and other locations that are rapped in high security. Also, while traveling on other assignments like many others I come into contract with normal and unusual security. I have created a gallery devoted to security features. This gallery aims to show some of the scenes that people are exposed to in a high security age.

Education, security, war and political news make up thisupdate of recent work. I took a portrait of Chuan Sheng Liu while working on a story about the Confucius Institute at the University of Maryland. I traveled with President Obama to Stromberg Metal Works, Inc for a tour and speech about the economy and I worked on a security initiative by Amtrak. Finally, another service member returned home after he was killed while serving over seas.

My update ofrecent work gallery this week includes an image from a story on a Missouri farm. Also, during my usual coverage of Capitol Hill a mother testifies about the sports related death of her son and TV comedian and pendent Stephen Colbert testified in character at a hearing on undocumented workers. Finally, the White House is receiving some infrastructure upgrades.

I have updated my recent work gallery with photos from early September. With the Senate out of session I covered the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission as they held a series of hearings about the economic crisis and the “too big to fail” bailouts. And I photographed former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair.

I have updated my recent work gallery with a few photos shot on assignment from late August. I was assigned to photograph Glenn Beck and his “Restoring Honor” rally. I photographed the Oval Office after it had been redecorated while the President was on vacation. I also photographed President Obama as he addressed the nation announcing the withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq.

I have updated my recent work gallery with a few photos shot on assignment from mid August. It is common to shoot more portraits then normal in the summer. Included in this update are portraits of Sidney Harman, who recently purchased Newsweek magazine, and Dr. Frances Kathleen Oldham, who spent 45 years at the FDA and refused to authorize thalidomide early in her career. I also covered a press conference by scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who discussed the possibility of an oil plume traveling from the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Finally, I was assigned to visit the grave of Senator Edward Kennedy and document those who visited on the first anniversary of his death from cancer.
